MALEDICTION (ENGLAND)

Middlesborough Progressive Death Metal act that excited considerable underground interest with their single released on the French Thrash label. MALEDICTION's early line-up consisted of vocalist Shaun Stephenson, guitarists Rich Mumford and Darren O'Hara, bass player Mark Fox and drummer Alistair Dunn. The band debuted with a March 1990, single track Grindcore demo 'Infestation' before the 'System Fear' 7" release on the Thrash label the following year. MALEDICTION released a demo 'Framework Of Condition' in October 1991 which besides new studio tracks featured a live recording of a gig supporting BOLT-THROWER. These sessions were due to include keyboard contributions from SIGH's Mira Kawashima but apparently the band opted to take their Japanese guest to the pub instead! O'Hara would decamp to found Folk / Death Metal act CERECLOTH and was replaced by Mark McGowan. Also emerging in 1992 would be a split cassette release entitled 'A Pungent And Sexual Miasma' shared with the fledgling CRADLE OF FILTH. A makeshift live album 'Chronicles Of Dissension' arrived in 1993 on the Gargle With Blood label. Also emerging the same year was the yellow vinyl 'Dark Effluvium' EP on the American Psychoslaughter label, although apparently released without the band's knowledge. Phil Slack would take over the drum stool but would soon relinquish his position to a returning Dunn. During 1994 a proposed split EP with American act INCARNIS was recorded but never released. MALEDICTION signed to the Arctic Serenades label recording their projected debut album 'The Millennium Cotillion'. However, with the label's demise the album was shelved. MALEDICTION duly folded.
